Sycamore St Project, Somerville

At Sycamore St, Somerville, MA we worked with the wonderful Chris Arthur Architects to transform a turn-of-the-century colonial into a charming, modern, sophisticated home.  Previously used as a two-family, the home required a lot of work to turn it back into a single family and repair a century of neglect.

THE PROJECT:
  • The new kitchen featured Kraftmaid cabinets by Carole Kitchens, a sophisticated Thermador appliance package, and custom soapstone counters.
  • The bathrooms featured tile packages by Genrose Tile, Grohe, Toto, and Kohler fixtures, and some really unique finishes that reflected the client’s personalities.
  • Redoing the “bones” of a house might be more important than making it pretty, and we did quite a bit of work to the bones of this one!  Unfortunately, much of the original structure was failing, and the house needed extensive reframing to be safe and to-code.  Additionally, Chris and the clients elected to install new beams to open up several areas, notably the kitchen / dining area and the 3rd floor.
  • We made extensive upgrades to the mechanical systems and the envelope of the building.  Marvin Elevate windows and closed cell spray foam made the leaky old house tight and energy efficient.  For mechanicals, the clients opted for a whole-house Mitsubishi heat pump system and a hybrid heat pump water heater, the cutting edge of energy efficient HVAC.
  • As the cherry on top, the 3rd floor got not only a massive picture window with a great view of the Somerville rooftops but also a custom-built sauna room.
